Call-out: unparalleled chance to rethink Sydney

The City of Sydney is asking artists, curators and other creative types from across Australia and beyond to submit their most inspiring ideas for Art & About Sydney 2013.

The annual festival, which celebrates art in unusual places, attracted record crowds in 2012 with a program including a house that rained on the inside, stunning 3D projections on Hyde Park’s trees, and a series of ‘friendly’ billboards that popped up across the city.

Expressions of interest are now open for this year’s festival, which will run from 20 September to 20 October.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the acclaimed public art festival needed creative projects from people of all disciplines and backgrounds.

“This is a rare opportunity to creatively rethink the way our city works,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Every street, laneway, building site, park and square is a potential location for creativity and storytelling.”

Expressions of interest for Art & About Sydney 2013 are now open across three categories:

  • Major installations and projects – to be funded between $10,000 – $80,000;
  • Collaborative children’s installation/project – to be funded between $10,000 – $50,000; and
  • Village art installation/project – to be funded up to $40,000.

Criteria differ across categories, but all submissions must demonstrate artistic excellence, an innovative approach, be highly accessible and appeal to a broad audience.

“Over the past 11 years, Art & About has grown from a small community festival to an internationally renowned celebration that attracts artists and collaborators of the highest calibre from all corners of the globe,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We’re putting creative work in the public domain, where it can inspire and challenge thousands of Sydneysiders.”

Expressions of interest across all categories close on 7 March.
