Sporting clubs and community groups can now apply for space at the City of Sydney’s soon-to-be-completed Perry Park Recreation Centre in Alexandria.
The new facility will include two indoor and two outdoor multi-purpose courts for netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, futsal and other sports. It will also feature a kiosk, change rooms and an outdoor terrace.
The recreation centre will operate alongside the existing basketball courts run by the City of Sydney Basketball Association, which is an independent community group.
“We have some of the best parks and community facilities in the country, but like the rest of Sydney, our local area has a fast growing population,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
“We’ve listened to the calls of the community and I’m looking forward to opening the doors of the Perry Park Recreation Centre, just a short walk from the new Green Square town centre, later this year.
“This will be a place where generations of residents and children can learn to play sport, form friendships and help create more of the wonderful communities that make our city a great place to live and spend time.
“The new park will cater for a different sports and activities, exercise classes for seniors, and school and preschool programs. It will make it easier for locals to take part in casual sports, high-level competition, recreation and anything that helps them lead a fit and healthy lifestyle.”
Clubs looking to express interest in an allocation of space must be based in the local government area. The City of Sydney Basketball Association will have exclusive use to run basketball programs at the centre.
The City manages 342 parks, 14 sporting fields, 13 community centres and five pools. Since 2004, the City has spent more than $270 million on more than 78 new and upgraded sporting facilities, parks and playgrounds across the city area.
Expressions of interest are open from 15 May 2018 to Friday 15 June 2018.
