City of Sydney to Consider Wider Smoking Ban
13 October 2004
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, today said Council would consider a wider ban on smoking in public places such as parks, in the light of the decisions by state governments to ban smoking at licensed premises. The Lord Mayor also announced that she will form a working group to liaise with various stakeholders on the introduction of the ban in licensed premises. "The move by the state governments is the right one. I want to ensure that in the City of Sydney we get it right for workers, residents, visitors and businesses. This is a critical public health issue," Mrs Moore said. "This is great for Sydney's health and image. We are a great party town and I believe this will bring even more people out of their homes to enjoy smoke-free drinking, dining and entertainment. "It is critical that we get the introduction of the ban right, across the 2,000 licensed premises in the City of Sydney Government area. The decision has implications for litter, pedestrian safety (through crowding on pavements) and building design. "We need to address these in partnership with the state government, licensed premises and other business, property, tourism and community groups. We just don't want to move the problem. "I will form a working group, chaired by myself and made up of Council Officers, that will consult and consider these important issues," Mrs Moore said. The Lord Mayor also said it is timely to look at the whole issue of smoking in public places. "Some councils have banned smoking at and near playgrounds, beaches, sporting fields and council sponsored community events. We need to have a look at this in the City of Sydney," Mrs Moore said. "I have asked Council to report to me by the end of the year on this matter," Mrs Moore said. Media contact: Angus Trigg 0413 946 708
