The best of the Redfern mob: Community studio produces first compilation CD

30 November 2005

The Redfern Community Centre's Music Studio has reached another milestone with the production and release of its first compilation CD.

The Best of the Mob at Redfern 05 is a collection of some of the best tracks recorded in the Studio over the past year as part of various training programs offered to locals and residents of the City of Sydney.

The Studio will be celebrating the CD's releasetoday at The Redfern Community Centre, cnr Hugo and Carolyn Streets Redfern from 6pm, with the local community and media invited to attend.

The compilation, mastered and produced using Pro Tools, features songs from locals Richard Green, Tim BishopRhubee Neale and Michael 'Westy' WestSouth Division, Maori crew Urban Misfitz, and a cross-section of other artists.

While the CD is not currently for sale a limited number will be freely distributed to the Community and used to promote awareness of the Centre's activities and initiatives.

The Centre's Music Studio is not a commercial facility but rather a resource for local artists to use and share. Its training program, Studio Ticket Training, has been running since mid 2004. More than 40 projects have been initiated under the direction of Manager, singer/songwriter and audio engineer, Tania Bowra.

"Studio Ticket Training reflects the do-it-yourself revolution in music making. It's becoming more important to songwriters and bands to be in control of the creative process, and making this affordable and accessible is the central aim of our program," said Ms Bowra.

"We also try to assist local artists who are not initially interested in the technical process, with a focus on facilitation and encouragement to become involved in production. We also run programs and workshops with a targeted approach to getting young people involved with music and music production," she said.

The Studio plans to run workshops in Hip Hop, Rock and other music genres in 2006.
