Sydney springs into bloom
25 September 2006
More than 30,000 flowers ranging from vivid red and yellow Celosias to eye-catching blue, red and violet Pansies will grace Sydney's streets as part of the City of Sydney's visual art festival, Art & About. Living Colour is the largest seasonal floral display of its kind in Australia with designs inspired by the works of famous artists such as van Gogh, Vasarely, Matisse, Klimt, Mondrian, and Australian Aboriginal Bronwyn Bancroft. The six-week long display of 13 different floral inspirations will feature at 17 sites in the City such as Queen Victoria Building, Martin Place, Alfred St at Circular Quay, Cathedral Square, and Taylor Square from 25 September to 3 November 2006.
Two rows of hanging displays each consisting of 80 individual flowers will feature on Oxford Street and Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross. Colourful collections of flowers will be in the city villages of Erskineville, Newtown, Surry Hills, Pyrmont, Glebe and Woolloomooloo. Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP says the warmer Spring weather is the perfect time to enjoy the City's floral displays. "Living Colour brightens the streets of our City and villages." The art works depicted in this Spring's floral displays include popular, recognisable pieces such as Vincent van Gogh's 'La Notte Stellata', Gustav Klimt's 'Hope II' and Piet Montrian's 'Composition in Red Blue Yellow.' Each flower is individually grown for the display, and over the six-week period, the displays naturally develop so people can revisit for a different, and sometimes, better interpretation of the art piece. Living Colour Spring 2006 is the biggest program yet for the City since its launch in 2000. About Sydney Living Colour The City of Sydney Living Colour Program is held twice a year - Summer and Spring. The program's main objective is to enhance the overall beautification of Sydney. Previous themes include 'Year of the Dog' in Summer 2006 and 'Christmas' in Spring 2005.
