Top Ten Artworks to Grace City Streets

21 June 2007

Ten images depicting vibrant scenes from Sydney's CBD and villages have been selected as finalists for display on city streets in July.

This year the artworks are rich in energy and colour and depict a vibrant city on the move with people walking, buses in motion, a bicycle, planes, a ferry and cars.

Councillor Marcelle Hoff said; "The images encapsulate Sydney's villages beautifully. We see the city skyline over a clothesline in Redfern, the iconic Badde Manors Café in Glebe, a verdant Sydney Park, a bicycle on King Street in Newtown, the bow of a ferry on Sydney Harbour, and walkers across the Bridge and Five Ways in Paddington."

The finalists were selected by a distinguished panel of judges; Sydney artists Wendy Sharpe and Ben Quilty, and Jackie Menzies, Head Curator of Asian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales,

The artworks will be reproduced as giant posters and feature on JCDecaux Street Furniture sites around the city from 17 - 30 July and shown in a gallery exhibition at the City of Sydney's Pine Street Creative Arts Centre from 17 July - 3 August.

The top placed entrant will be announced on 17 July and receive prize money of $3,000.

The Sydney, City of Villages art competition produced by City of Sydney, in partnership with JCDecaux, attracted more than 112entries from Australian artists working in painting, printmaking or drawing.

JC Decaux CEO Steve O'Connor said; "Sydney's diversity and varied street life was a source of inspiration for artists. The artworks will add fun and colour to the cityscape."
