The Gehl Report – Recommendations and Future Implementation

3 December 2007

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP today welcomed leading international urban design expert Professor Jan Gehl's report, which proposes a range of initiatives to make Sydney's CBD more attractive, liveable and sustainable.

"I welcome Jan Gehl's report. The city of Sydney belongs to us all - the people who live, work, and visit - and this report is about the future of our city and its sustainability," Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said.

"It is about economic sustainability (compare how Melbourne's taken off since Gehl's recommendations were implemented); social sustainability and the need to bring all ages together; and environmental sustainability which is critical as we face the challenge of global warming."

"Jan Gehl's recommendations are about correcting the mistakes of the past, reconnecting the city with the harbour, making it pedestrian friendly and ensuring it remains economically successful.

"Jan Gehl is an outside expert, a Dane like Utzon who gave us the Opera House. He is advising us on how we can make Sydney the best city in the world and really exploit the attributes of our wonderful harbour and climate.

"His recommendations and our Sustainable Sydney 2030 project are about vision and legacy. It can be achieved through partnerships: Federal, State and the City working together."

"Our cities are vital to our future, the majority of Australians live in our cities."

"Our capital cities are responsible for 78 percent of economic activity in the past five years and Sydney is the most important city in Australia, its Australia's global city and we must plan for its future."

Sydney's population increased by 50 percent in the last decade, and every day 500,000 people move around the CBD and one million move through the City of Sydney Local Government Area.

The initiatives contained in the Public Space-Public Life Action Plan, commissioned by the City of Sydney, range from small to large, manageable to complex, and across short, medium and long term time frames.

Not all of them can be undertaken and delivered by the City alone. An alliance of stakeholders - Council, the State and Federal Governments, community and business sector - will be required to seriously consider, plan, develop and implement the various proposals.

"We all know that changes are needed - some more urgently than others," Ms Moore said.

"We can't afford to neglect our CBD. We all have to work together and with greater determination to put pedestrians first, provide more open and green space, get rid of ugly infrastructure, and add colour and vibrancy to our City.

"The Gehl Report points the way forward on many fronts. It's not going to happen overnight, but we have to get started sooner rather than later.

"This exciting report will help the City develop city centre public domain plans and finalise the Pedestrian strategy," Ms Moore said.
