Architects’ aid - building for the future

10 December 2008

Australian architects are lending a hand rebuilding in tsunami struck Solomon Islands, a new exhibition at Customs House reveals.

Emergency Architects Australia (EAA) responded to the devastating tsunami/earthquake of April 2007 by sending experts to share skills and rebuild community facilities.

The new Customs House exhibition showcases training workshops, the construction of a shelter exemplar in Mondo and Tapari village on Rennonga island, and a school in Ngari on the western side of Ghizo island.

EAA is a 'not-for-profit' organization, working with professional volunteers in the region, immediately after man-made or natural disasters, providing rapid assessment and sustainable reconstruction to communities which ask for assistance.

In the past, EAA has provided assistance to communities in Sigli, Aceh (funded by Australian Red Cross), Java in Indonesia, Mutur in Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Emergency Architects Australia, is a not for profit voluntary organisation. Funds raised send built environment specialists to disaster areas to assist local communities and governments to rebuild devastated areas in a sustainable way.
