Save money and energy with free solar workshops

9 June 2010

Inner west and inner city residents are invited to a series of free workshops this winter to learn how solar panels can save money, increase property values and help protect the environment.

The workshops are run by Newtown-based The Watershed, and provide a step-by-step guide for residents who want to install photovoltaic solar panels at home to generate their own electricity from the sun.

Photovoltaic solar panels are a clean and environmentally-friendly way of collecting solar energy. The workshops will outline how solar panels work, where to buy them and how to set them up, as well as provide information on government rebates.

"Sydney residents are increasingly conscious of the need for individuals, households and community groups to take practical action to combat global warming," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"Installing solar panels at home is one of the most cost-effective and energy efficient ways that households can move towards a more sustainable lifestyle, so I encourage all residents to learn about the benefits of solar power from the Watershed."

The Watershed is a joint initiative of Marrickville and City of Sydney Councils and is committed to helping local residents and businesses make simple, practical changes towards sustainable living.

The Watershed provides workshops, business programs, practical advice and a drop-in shopfront for people interested in climate change mitigation. Popular recent workshops have included worm farming, composting and natural cleaning and home detox.

The Mayor of Marrickville Councillor Sam Iskandar said that Marrickville has a strong record as a leader in sustainability in the local community. "Increasing pressure on the environment is a significant and critical problem for our planet. That's why Marrickville Council is proud of the work The Watershed is doing in strengthening our community, teaching sustainability principles and having a positive impact on the world."
