Sydney residents and organisations who want to host a community event but lack the funding can apply for City of Sydney matching support of up to $10,000.
Whether an art exhibition, a ‘bling your bike’ comp in the park with neighbours, workshops to revamp old jewellery or pop-up cinemas, the City’s matching grants program provides support for all kinds of projects.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore encouraged residents and organisations to apply for a grant before 16 September.
“Our matching grants program supports projects that help bring people together and build a sense of community,” the Lord Mayor said.
“We have already supported dozens of wonderful initiatives including public art, community gardens, multicultural events and activities that have helped Sydneysiders build strong relationships with their neighbours.
“It’s a great opportunity for enthusiastic and creative minds to contribute to the local community and make our city more liveable.”
Anyone with ideas for projects that will contribute to the community, can send in a submission and the City ‘matches’ the time and effort of successful applications with a grant of up to $10,000 in cash or in-kind support.
Elizabeth McKenzie, from Surry Hills, received a $7,470 matching grant in June to help establish the Picnic Markets, an outdoor event which is set to launch in October.
“We will have a small gathering in the park with picnic blankets dotted with pre-loved items such as clothes, knick-knacks and one-of-a-kind homemade creations – as long as it fits on your blanket, it’s for sale,” Ms McKenzie said.
“The community is encouraged to take part in a more sustainable lifestyle and learn the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling.”
The City offers 20 grants and sponsorship programs to support a wide range of community projects, including open days, festivals, sports workshops, educational days and exhibitions.
