Planting a forest for National Tree Day

Planting a forest for National Tree Day

Green-thumbs, apartment dwellers, kids, families and friends will plant more than 4,500 new trees in Sydney Park this Sunday, 28 July, to celebrate Planet Ark’s National Tree Day and help green the City.

More than 300 people are expected to join the free planting event, where they can enjoy a barbecue, get their hands dirty and learn about greening their homes.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City was working to increase the urban canopy by 50 per cent by 2030.

“Our parks are hugely important, particularly to inner city residents who often don’t have backyards or other green space,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Planting more trees helps cool our city, reduce air pollution, make our parks and streets more beautiful and provide habitat for native birds and other wildlife.”

The City is a supporter of this annual event as part of its Greening Sydney Plan, which includes initiatives encouraging volunteers to help green the city.

Sydney Park will also host several education tents on the day, offering tips about green living and eco-workshops.

There are around 30,000 street trees and 12,000 trees in parks throughout the City of Sydney, along with green roofs and walls.

Green spaces also improve the health of the local community, helping clean pollutants from the air, creating shade in our parks and streets and enhancing general wellbeing.

Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than three million volunteers have planted over 18.6 million trees and shrubs, with more than a million trees being added across Australia each year.
