The City of Sydney Media Centre web site makes some use of data that directly or indirectly identifies users. We take great care with practices that affect personal privacy.

Data Collected by the City of Sydney

Data that in some way identifies the user is gathered during interactions with the City of Sydney City Media Centre web site in the following circumstances:

Computer Information

It is a necessary part of visiting any web site, including the City Media Centre site, that the user’s web browser provides the machine’s identity (its IP address) to the web server, so that the server can address the reply to the correct machine. In addition, the browser type and operating system are provided.

Navigation and ClickStream Data

Browsing any web site, including the City of Sydney’s City Media Centre site, generates a trail of pages visited and the time apparently spent displaying each page. We do not use any cookies on any area of the site that is accessible to the public.

User Feedback

We seek feedback from our users in order to improve the service offered by the site. Answering feedback questions is voluntary and does not in any way affect your access to the City Media Centre web site.

Subscription & Registration Details

Information provided by you when you register with the City Media Centre will be used for our media release mailing list, and to ensure high-resolution images are downloaded for appropriate use.

You will only receive mailing list messages if you choose to ‘opt in’ and select the appropriate option in your registration.

We also manage access to your registration details and high-resolution images using a facility called a cookie. This cookie identifies and recognises the computer (but not the person using the computer) when you visit the web site.

Cookies are inert pieces of information that a web site can transfer to an individual’s computer hard drive for record keeping. Cookies can not be shared with other web sites. Cookies can make using easier by storing information about your preferences. This will enable you to take full advantage of the services that offers.

The use of cookies is an industry standard and you’ll find most major web sites use them. Most Internet browsers are pre-set to accept cookies. If you prefer not to receive cookies, you can adjust your Internet browser to disable cookies or to warn you when cookies are being used.

Data Storage, Use and Disclosure, and Retention

All personal data described in the preceding section is stored in transmission logs, and archived for a period that is yet to be determined but is likely to be at least 12 months and quite probably 7 years.

The data is used by the City of Sydney site software, and by staff involved in the City Media Centre web site operation, only for:

  • web site and system administration, including monitoring to prevent security breaches;
  • mailing lists; and
  • evaluation, research and development.

Identified data can only be re-disclosed to the user if the user provides the unique request session number. Identified data may be disclosed to a third party only in circumstances in which such disclosure is legally authorised, such as in the investigation of a criminal offence, and in compliance with a search warrant or subpoena.

We have strict guidelines to make sure your personal information is kept private and confidential.  The staff who operate the City of Sydney web sites, and most Commonwealth government agencies, are subject to the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.
