Ski accident inspired online success

Yoga was a great stress release for busy Sydney TV presenter Danielle Bowern, but it was a bad accident that prompted the media professional to turn her hobby into a global business.

When she broke her leg while skiing two years ago and was bed ridden, Ms Bowern took the opportunity to create an online designer yoga mat business, Bowern, and she hasn’t looked back.

The young entrepreneur will share her business insights at the City of Sydney’s free Small Business Digital 101 seminar on Wednesday 30 May.

“The power of digital channels is that they allow us to sell anywhere. Facebook and Insta can help create brand awareness, loyalty and drive direct-to-consumer sales,” Ms Bowern said.

“I learned early on how important it is to have a strong brand presence across all social outlets. As an avid social media user, I understood the importance of conversation flow. Once the brand began to grow and flourish, Facebook was the main way we could interact with our audience.”

The seminar will show businesses how to create genuine social media followings and convert them to sales on Facebook, with advice from an industry expert and a Q&A session with business owners who are thriving online.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the digital business seminars filled an important information gap for local business operators.

“We know that a digital strategy and online presence are vital for businesses looking to grow their business and connect with customers,” the Lord Mayor said.

“These seminars are designed to help small business owners increase their digital and social media skills with practical advice from industry professionals, invaluable insights from local business operators and the opportunity to network with fellow business owners.”

Presented by Tansa Mehroke, Facebook small business account manager for Australia-New Zealand, the seminar will examine online customer engagement and cover how to:

  • design campaigns
  • create effective advertising
  • use audience targeting
  • write engaging content

There will also be an opportunity for six businesses to have a 15-minute one-on-one session with the Facebook team to ask specific questions about their business.

Joining Ms Bowern at the seminar is Min Chai, a one-time accountant who founded N2 Extreme Gelato. He will detail how the brand uses social media to drive customers to their outlets in Sydney, Melbourne and Paris.

“Since we’re not an e-commerce store, a lot of our online presence is about keeping people informed about what we have. This means sharing new collaborations, events we’re attending and new flavours coming out,” Mr Chai said.

“It’s about gaining traction with millennials, one of our main target audiences, getting them be excited and having them tag their friends. This generates a conversation and encourages them to come down to our store.

“All social media platforms have insights and analytics as well. For us, social media is very much two-way. We get to know the customers complaints, feelings and thoughts, and we use this feedback to know what to improve on.”
