Sydneysiders will have a more active option on Friday nights when the City of Sydney launches Up Late at the KGV in the heart of The Rocks this week.
The King George V Recreation Centre (KGV) on Cumberland Street will keep its two indoor basketball courts open until 11.30pm every Friday night, and a hip-hop soundtrack will make sure players and spectators get entertainment, not just exercise.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Up Late at the KGV would provide another healthy late night option.
“Sydney should have active and fun options late at night that don’t just revolve around drinking,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The KGV’s basketball courts are currently open until 9pm, but we know there’s a demand for these hours to be extended. Anyone, from keen basketballers to those learning the game, is welcome to come down to KGV, meet new people, practice their skills and indulge a little friendly competition.”
The Up Late at the KGV program includes over three hours of ‘basketball and beats’ every Friday night, from 8pm to 11.30pm ($5). There’s also an early bird basketball session from 3pm to 8pm ($5).
During the sessions, which are open to all ages and skill levels, people can take part in three-on-three comps, traditional games, or just private practice on the half court.
The KGV Recreation Centre – one of five community centres owned and managed by the City – offers high quality sports and fitness facilities, and community services to city residents, workers, students and visitors.
The centre has multipurpose indoor and outdoor courts, a spacious gym and popular exercise classes, providing a one-stop-shop for everyone’s training needs. Experienced fitness professionals lead group classes and are on hand
every day to support, monitor and assist with training goals.
