On Saturday 21 October, at least 256 garage sales will be held across the City of Sydney as part of the seventh annual Garage Sale Trail, with a further 10,000 being held across the country.
Lucia Elliott is one of 300,000 Australians preparing to sell their pre-loved wares as part of the nationwide campaign promoting sustainability and community, while creating a bargain hunters bonanza.
Ms Elliott’s sale – named The Ex Factor – in James Hilder Reserve, Surry Hills, will feature treasures she’s collected since the early 1990s.
Among the items listed are a prized set of Twin Peaks trading cards, a scooter that doubles as carry-on luggage, and Tori Spelling’s signed autobiography.
“They’re things I’ve picked up all over the world, been gifted and have sought high and low for, at a time when my pop culture sensibilities knew absolutely no bounds,” said Ms Elliott, who lives in Surry Hills.
“I’ve done Garage Sale Trail before, and it’s fantastic. I posted my sale on Facebook and friends I hadn’t seen in years turned up to visit. It’s a genuine community experience and a great opportunity to do some life laundry.”
Ms Elliott said she was willing to entertain hagglers, provided they entertain her.
“If someone wants to talk down the price on the Twin Peaks trading cards then they need to do a pretty good David Lynch impersonation,” she added.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Garage Sale Trail invigorated the City of Sydney’s strong local communities.
“Garage Sale Trail is about having fun, helping the environment and finding a new home for unwanted goods,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Over the last few years we’ve seen a shift in thinking. People are far more conscious about waste and where their items end up. We would much rather see our pre-loved items end up in the hands of someone who will treasure them, rather than sending them out to landfill.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to meet their neighbours and make new friends.”
Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder, Darryl Nichols, said the campaign was launched seven years ago to create positive social and environmental change in communities across Australia. Since its humble beginnings in Bondi, the campaign has grown into a national movement.
“We love the creative spirit and colour that sellers like Lucia bring to their sale names and the unexpected items on offer,” Mr Nichols said.
“These aren’t just household items. Many of the surprise items are put up for sale by charities, community groups and schools.”
